In January of 2025, Judge Michael Bohren ordered the release of Morgan Geyser from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. The 22-year-old had been previously sentenced to 40 years in a mental institution back in 2018 after she pled guilty for the attempted murder of her friend back in 2014. She and Anissa Weier lured their friend Payton Leutner into a wooded area of a park and stabbed her nineteen times to appease the fictional character of Slender Man.
Morgan and Anissa were sentenced to be confined in a mental health facility. In 2021, at the age of 19, Anissa was granted supervised release. She lives with her father, but Morgan remained confined. After seven years of confinement, Judge Bohren ruled that Morgan was no longer a risk to society. However, her discharge was stopped after state officials raised concerns about a book she was reading as well as a recurring visitor.
The book was called “Rent Boy”, which is about sex, murder, and an organ theft ring. She did not tell her therapy team, and this raised red flags. She also was found to be in contact with a murder memorabilia collector, sent him sketches of decapitated bodies, and expressed her interest in him sexually. This put a pause on Morgan’s release.
But several days ago, Judge Bohren ruled that Morgan’s release will continue as planned. She will be on conditional release under substantial supervision since three medical experts testified that she is no longer a threat to the public. The judge said that the state did not meet its burden of proof to block the release and that his decision relied on the testimony of Morgan’s medical team. A hearing is set for March 21, 2025, to review her conditional release plan.
I am sure we will hear more about this very soon.
