Summer is finally here, but that doesn’t mean that Horrifying History HQ isn’t working away to bring you more tales of the macabre. In fact, by the time you read this, we will be working on our August episodes (no spoilers). Going to the beach is the perfect time to listen to your favourite podcasts. Nothing is better than hearing about the spooky side of life while enjoying the waves.
Hollywood is a place where dreams can come true, or die. Many people dream of becoming famous there, but some become famous for different reasons. In our June 4th episode, we spoke about several of these people. For Dominique Dunne, it wasn’t the fame that killed her. It was a man whom she met due to her fame. Her death is an example of how domestic abuse can happen to anyone, and how leaving can put the victim in danger. What bugs me the most is how Dominique’s killer told the court that he didn’t plan to kill her, and how little time in prison he got for his crime. I’m going to put this out there: Just because you didn’t “plan” to kill someone doesn’t mean you should get a “get out of jail free” card.
Statistics show that the most dangerous time for a domestic abuse survivor is when they attempt to leave or they do leave their abusive partner. If you are enduring domestic abuse, please tell someone. Your partner will not stop, and in time, things will get worse. Get help, and they can help you leave safely. Reach out to the organizations in your area for domestic abuse. Remember: you are not alone.
Our next story tells about the risk of fame. Christina Grimmie had just started to show her talent to the world, and she died because of it. When many people see famous people trying to hide or push away paparazzi, they have negative thoughts. They think dealing with the press and the public is just part of the job. Many believe that just because the superstar is putting themselves out there, they deserve all of this attention, whether it is positive or negative. But the truth is that no one deserves constant harassment and stalkers. In the case of Christina Grimmie and Rebecca Schaeffer, this resulted in their deaths.
Our June 11th episode was a request from a fan of our show. He wanted to hear more stories on cannibalism, and we delivered. We talked about Alexander Pearce, who was sent to the worst penal colony in the British Empire. Personally, if I were sent to a place that horrible, I would want to escape, too. But considering the conditions outside the colony, I would likely stay put. But Alexander and I are nothing alike. He broke out, resulting in the escapees with him turning into Happy Meals. Alexander may have started out doing survival cannibalism, but that was not the case when he escaped the second time.
In the case of Alfred Packer, his reason to dive into cannibalism was different. He was planning to scam the people he was being a guide for. After all, he would always get lost in the wilderness. It is also clear that he got everyone into a dire situation due to his ego. But evidence showed that he used the people who hired him as a food source for months. It is also clear that he killed everyone at once and robbed them. I don’t know if he planned to have some human hamburger helper, but that’s what happened. I think this guy should have had a life sentence for what he did. If the rumour of Alfred becoming a vegetarian is true, at least he showed some remorse.
Our episode on June 18th came about because of a social media post I made. For those who don’t know, we post daily about dark history. This includes things like UFO sightings, weird history, true crime, cryptids, ghosts, and more. One of the posts I made was about the Yetis that are said to be living in the Himalayan mountains. Someone online decided to tear me a new one about this post, saying that I should know that the Yeti are said to be the same creature, or a cousin to Sasquatches and other similar cryptids in the world. They did not get that I was referencing specific details about the creatures in Tibet. That is why I decided to do an episode about the various creatures like them around the globe. When you listen to this episode, you will learn that many areas have similar legendary creatures to the Yeti, but there are differences. Hopefully, this episode will make the internet trolls happy.
The last episode of the month spoke about a place that I only recently heard about: The Bridgewater Triangle. Strangely, so many supernatural events are said to happen here. From aliens to the Sasquatch, this place has it all. But why here? If you look at history, this area has had a lot of bloodshed. Did all of these events combine to create a scar on the land, or is this a bunch of legends mixed up with hoaxes? That is up to you to decide.
For our fan club, we put out some great stories this month. Our bonus episodes are all centred in New Orleans. The first was about a ghost named the Octoroon Mistress. In the second, you hear the stories about the Phantom Army of New Orleans and the hauntings of the Beauregard-Keyes house. In the third, fan club members heard about a ghost called the Creole Lady of Royal Street. To close the month, we told the tale of New Orleans' Devil’s Mansion. Join our fan club to not only hear these stories but also get our main episodes a week early. After all, membership has its perks!
But that is not all that happened in the Horrifying History world in June. On June 5th, we were on the X-Zone Radio show, where we talked about ghosts from around Canada. We also went on the Family Plot podcast to talk about the infamous Delphine LaLaurie. Was she a serial killer? Are the tales about her exaggerated? Be sure to check out this episode. It’s a good one. Also, check out the X-Zone Radio show. You can find all their spooky episodes on their website www.classic1220.ca.
…and until next time!
