Killers, Killers, and More Killers
This Month is All About True Crime
Before I get started with our monthly episode review; I wanted to bring something up. I didn’t realize it, but this June we released our 250th episode. The funny thing is that I never planned to do more than four. When the idea of Horrifying History popped into my brain, I thought there was no way in hell that anyone other than my mom would listen. Boy was I wrong. Horrifying History is listened to by many spooky friends worldwide. Every day when I sit at my desk to work on an aspect of our show; I think of this, and think how lucky I have been. So I wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you who listens to our podcast each week. Without you, I wouldn’t be writing this blog right now. Horrifying History has been quite a ride, and that ride isn’t stopping anytime soon.
So…on to our episode review….
When we were planning our episodes for August 2024; we didn’t plan for all of our episodes to be about different serial killers. For our first episode concerning the Brazilian Dexter, I actually planned to tell a story about a very famous ghost. But when I found out about Pedro Filho; I had to tell his story first. When I first heard that the TV show/book series about Dexter Morgan was based on a real person, I had to learn more. The timing of this couldn’t be better, since Paramount+ and Showtime recently announced the cast for their Dexter prequel series. It is called Dexter: Original Sin, and the cast members are: Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, and Patrick Dempsey as the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide (Harry’s boss). I can’t wait to see it.
Concerning Pedro; I can understand why locals though of him as their anti-hero. He was cleaning up the streets when the police were not. But the problem is that no one person should ever by anyone’s judge and jury. When I learned about the details how Pedro died, I wasn’t surprised at all. After all…when you live by the sword, you die by the sword.
The next serial killer we spoke about is world famous: Delphine Lalaurie. I have wanted to tell the tale of Delphine since the very beginning of our podcast. But the thing was that I didn’t want to tell just the legends. I wanted to tell the real story that hasn’t been changed for years by tour guides. So I hit the books, and I discovered that a lot of what is being told today as Delphine’s story has been exaggerated. Even so, that doesn’t mean what she did was not horrible in every way. I think that after listening to this episode that you will feel the same as I do about Delphine Lalaurie; she did horrible acts, but she wasn’t alone in this. It is clear that her husband and possibly children were involved in those acts too. I find it very interesting that the legends basically put all the blame on Delphine, when it is clear that she wasn’t the only bad guy in this situation.
Our next episode in August was about Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton. He was known as the Pig Farmer Serial Killer, and this was another episode that we planned to do later this fall. But then came something that no one expected. Robert was attacked in prison, and died days later. When that happened, I had to make a switch and tell this story sooner than expected.
I don’t think there is one person in Canada that shed a tear when Robert died. In fact, many think he got what he deserved. But the bad thing about this is that we will likely never be able to answer one question: did Robert have a killing partner? After doing research for this episode; I think it is highly possible. To me, it doesn’t make sense that Robert claims that he killed 49 women, yet DNA profiles at the crime scene says that 80 individuals (both male and female) were at that farm. On top of that, Robert didn’t hide the trophies that he took from those who he killed. He left them lying all over his home, which his friends and family often visited. Even stranger than this…DNA from a victim was found in Robert’s brother’s home that was on the same property as Robert’s home. That same DNA was found in the slaughterhouse’s fridge on that same property. The murder math is not adding up here, but now that Robert is dead - it is extremely unlikely we will ever find out the full truth of what happened on the Pickton farm.
Our last episode of August 2014 was about Agrippina the Younger, who is a very interesting character from history. This episode was a listener request, and it actually has been sitting on my “to do” list for quite a while. In case you are wondering why; when I started Horrifying History, I created a document that lists all of our episodes by season and release date. But that list is also my idea list. Whenever a spooky idea pops into my head; I add the idea to the bottom of the list, which is divided by season. Sometimes (just like this month) these ideas get moved around based on what stories we want to tell each month, and the tale of Agrippina was well over due to be told.
Agrippina (or Julia as we referred to her in our episode) was unique for her times. She did not care what she did or who she hurt to gain the power that she desired, but what she didn’t expect was that her son Nero was just like his mother. He also was “a little off”, and had no issue with killing to gain power. What possibly could go wrong with that? She definitely has one thing in common with the two men that we spoke about this month…when you live by the sword, you die by the sword. But that wasn’t the case with Delphine Lalaurie. Sometimes when you have enough money and a get away plan; it can result in you living the rest of your life in luxury.
